Elsewhere in Africa: Ivorian Refugees

"My country has two presidents."

In February 2011, more than 40,000 Ivorians refugees fled post election violence and insecurity after two presidential candidates both claimed victory. By April, that number was more than 120,000.

Liberians, who had been refugees in Ivory Coast just a couple of years earlier, are hosting many refugees in villages along the border and others are being relocated to semi-permanent refugee camps.

The remote locations make delievery of goods and services nearly impossible, and many refugees have been relocated to permanent camps.

Though the conflict between the two leaders claiming the presidency of Ivory Coast is technically over, few refugees are going home for fear of further political instability and violent reprisals.
